Depart at 8.00 am from your hotel in Bucharest (pick up included), we will take the way to Prahova Valley and turn right to Slanic Prahova Salt Mine.
Known as the biggest salt mine in Europe, Slanic Prahova stands today for one of the most important watering and climatic resorts in Romania, situated between the valley of Prahova and that of Teleajen, at about 44 km of Ploiesti, at 400 meters of altitude.
Nowadays, this salt mine is closed for extraction purposes, but is open for visitors, featuring a microclimate with natural air-conditioning and constant temperature and atmospheric pressure throughout the year. It is an old salt mine that was exploited since long time ago, and today is an impressive museum.
Unique in the country, but also in Europe, the salt mine is formed out of 14 rooms. The total area is of 78,000 m2 and the excavated space is of 2,9 million m3 of salt.
The access to the mine is done by two elevators that make the transport of the visitors possible. The ventilation is naturally made, and the 12 degrees C temperature is constant throughout the whole year.
Also, in the salt mine there have been arranged playing grounds, a sports ground, a room with tables for billiards and a bar room.
One of the chambers is a salt museum named Genesis Hall it hosts the busts in salt of Decebalus, King of Dacia and Traian Emperor. There are also other salt sculptures in the mine, such as the bust of the famous Romanian national poet Mihai Eminescu, or a bas-relief of the historical character Mihai Viteazul.
