Wilderness and ancient heritage - Poiana Rusca Masiff. Day trip from Timisoara

Day trip from Timisoara

Due to its riches, the region has always had an important role in the economic and social development of the territory. Natural resources - iron ore, non-ferrous and rare metals - have favored this development since ancient times, the Dacians being the first who exploited these resources. The wonderful settlements in the Poaia Rusca Massif, superbly combining the essential elements of nature - marble, iron and wood -, represent one of the most beautiful areas in Banat, and not only. They capitalize on its gifts and natural resources - the picturesque settlement, the important historical traditions, the tourist attractions, the rich heritage of industrial history and the experience accumulated during its more than 250 years of existence.

We stop first to climb the steep wall called “Turnul lui Liman”. According to a local story, “in the middle of the 18th century, these lands were surrounded by bands of outlaws led by the outlaw Liman, and the rocks were real observation towers for what was happening in the valley”.

"Turnul lui Liman" is a category B route, the access is easy, physically demanding passages alternate with 3 regroupings for rest. The route is well equipped but a good balance is required as artificial outlets alternate with natural outlets.

Length of via ferrata route: 100m. Vertical climb: 80m.

Difficulty: B (medium). Grades are from A (very easy) to E (extreme).

We continue to survey the area of Poiana Rusca Massif, towards Romanesti Cave. The place is very famous for its special acoustics and the concerts held there. It belongs to the category of medium caves with a total development of 1450m, arranged horizontally on three levels. It has been investigated as early as the 19th century with important revealing about the past inhabitance; baths inhabit the cave in a big colony; the main attraction resides due to its excellent acoustic: since 1984 the local caving association organizes a series of concerts in the Cave Concert Hall, attended by famous bands, including Banat Philharmonic Orchestra.

Nature is an artist constantly busy giving us wonders like the Romanesti Cave. The constant temperature here seems to make time stand still. And the concerts that runs from time to time whispers that everything is music.
